Homeland Security Policy Institute Names 2009 Senior Fellows
March 12, 2009—The George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) today announced the appointment of its 2009 Senior Fellows class.
“The Senior Fellows are a highly distinguished group drawn from many disciplines that will contribute greatly to HSPI’s policy and research agenda,” said Frank Cilluffo, Director of HSPI. “Our 2009 Senior Fellows are well positioned to tackle the diverse and challenging set of issues currently facing our nation’s leaders.”
A selection committee including representation from HSPI’s Steering Committee, the 2008 class of Senior Fellows, and staff reviewed the unprecedented number of applications. The members of the 2009 class are drawn from government, academia, the non-profit and private sectors, with expertise in areas including counterterrorism, counter-radicalization, intelligence, homeland security budgeting, humanitarian assistance, crisis communications, the behavioral sciences, interagency coordination, critical infrastructure protection, public health, community preparedness, defense and counter-insurgency. Throughout the year, Fellows will participate in roundtable sessions with senior government officials, and collaborate to publish policy papers, including issue briefs that speak to the day’s most pressing homeland security challenges.
Members of this year’s class have already been active on multiple fronts. For example, HSPI Senior Fellow Michael Bopp developed and co-moderated an HSPI Policy & Research Forum on “Homeland Security Priorities for the 111th Congress,” featuring top staff from the congressional homeland security committees. HSPI Senior Fellow Seth Stodder published an HSPI issue brief titled “Hey Good Samaritans–Get a Lawyer!”
Senior fellows were selected based upon individual expertise, not their professional affiliation. They are not HSPI employees.
HSPI is a non-partisan “think and do” tank whose mission is to build bridges between theory and practice to advance homeland security through an interdisciplinary approach. By convening domestic and international policymakers and practitioners at all levels of government, the private and non-profit sectors, and academia, HSPI creates innovative strategies and solutions to current and future threats to the nation.
