British MP George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley led a 300 strong team of volunteers across the Rafah border, after 23 days of challenging conditions across many continents. The worst resistance came from the Egyptian authorities, who tried to break up the envoy and divert vehicles through Israel.
It was an exhilirating moment when food and medical aid finally arrived in Gaza.
George Galloway handed the keys to the vehicles to the Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, including 3 cars and £25,000 cash for the Prime Minister. The people of Gaza have been enclosed in an open prison, relying on smuggling food and necessities through dangerous underground tunnels for suvival. 22 days of air strikes and white phosphorous bombs left 1,300 dead, mainly civilians, women and children, thousands injured and the health and education infrastructure of Gaza destroyed.
Thousands of children are left orphaned.
George Galloway is hopeful that further convoys of aid will be sent to Gaz by the Arab countries and that the Rafah border will remain open. Egyptian authorities are influenced by the Israeli policy to destroy Gaza. Israeli refugees came to Palestine in 1948, but have grown its settlement to occupy over 90% of the Palestianian land. The aim of the UK movement Viva Palestine is to free Palestine from Israeli occupation.
