March 10, 2009 - PRLog -- In order to promote the best of their hometown, Cub Scouts from Pack 263 of Farmington Hills, Michigan will celebrate all things "Made In Detroit" as they compete in their annual Pinewood Derby Races on March 14th.  Banners and displays from NASCAR and the Big Three automakers will surround the young racers as they cheer their cars to the finish line.  Prizes and food from many Detroit favorites will help to make it a memorable day for the cub scouts and their families.

"We chose this theme because when there's not much being said that's good about our hometown, we wanted to give the boys a positive look at the industry and products that help make this area great," said den leader Paul Garland.

So when the Cubs and their families gather at Kenbrook Elementary on Saturday morning to race their cars, there will be prizes from the Big Three automakers.  Flags and banners from Dodge.  Real NASCAR body panels from Roush Racing.  Posters and memorabilia from The Detroit Tigers.  T-shirts from Made In Detroit Clothing.  And lunch treats or prizes from Detroit icons like Faygo, Vernors, Domino's Pizza, The Detroit Popcorn Company, Better Made Potato Chips, and Buddy’s Pizza.

The Pinewood Derby is the most anticipated event for Cub Scouts each year, with millions of cars built and raced nationally since it began in 1953.  In each pack, the boys receive a 7 inch block of wood with four axles and wheels, and then they design, cut, sand, paint and add weight to get their cars race-ready.  It is a great project for parents and sons to spend time over, and promotes fun and good-sportsmanship on race day.

It's not only the fastest cars that rule the day, but the most creative as well.  Sleek sports car designs might race wheel to wheel with rolling sharks, hotdogs, even a bathtub - whatever the boys' imagination and skill can conjure up.  Trophies and prizes will go to the speediest cars, and to those judged to have the best designs.

The following Detroit area companies have already offered their generous support of the Derby through food, product and prize donations:  BBDO Detroit and Dodge, Roush Racing, Made In Detroit Clothing, The Detroit Popcorn Company, Hiller’s Market, Buddy’s Pizza, Costco Warehouse, Busch’s Market, The Detroit Tigers, and Faygo Beverages.  Their support of Cub Scout Pack 263 shows what's really the best thing about Detroit -- the spirit and generosity of the people who live here.
