The US department of Education conducted a survey on various aspects of online education and recently reported the findings through the website of the IES National Center for Education Statistics. According to the findings, by the academic year 2007, 12.2 million students were enrolling in some form of online education in the US alone. This number is expected to rise steadily over the nest half-decade by about 18-19% and may reach 18+ million students by 2012-2013. This rising trend seems a direct reaction to the recently higher costs of living and transportation, as well as restrictions on time and travel imposed upon most working students in the US due to the credit crunch and on many international students who have recently faced difficulties in obtaining permission for study on traditional campus based US schools, colleges and Universities.
The options available in distance learning are also expanding every quarter, as it is reported that most institutions are conducting serious efforts to offer most of their programs online in order to cater to remotely placed students and to take advantage of the rising remote learning market. The job market has suffered at the hands of recession recently, and while many employees are losing jobs, many are seeking to improve their professional profiles by taking up online/ distance courses in order to become more valuable to and better paid by their organizations. In addition to this, it is reported that many non-traditional online courses are appearing every day, giving people the opportunity to take up previously courses previously not available as distance learning courses.
The proliferation of distance learning is set to continue over the conceivable future, with most traditional campus-based courses now including major elements of distance learning in virtually their entire curriculum. Where a few years ago, the majority of students enrolling in campus based schools distrusted or did not know enough about distance learning, and accreditation was an issue, now, distance learning is becoming an accepted norm as a part of traditional education as well.
