The district of Msambweni likes 50km south of Mombasa, within this district lays the small village of Makongeni. There is only one school in the village, Makongeni primary school. The school was originally designed to take 150 pupils but since the recent advent of free primary education in Kenya, the school is able to take over 600 pupils. In 2005 camp Kenya constructed a nursery school.

Camp Kenya holds an agreement with the primary school in Makongeni and the community for a three year development programme, which is represented by local chiefs and Kenyan government officials. There has been a significant change due to the hard work put in by the team over the years. Because of this children are being able to be provided with the education they deserve, with the marked improvement of the school and its facilities, including desks, new class rooms, extra recreational activities and more! This also creates permanent and seasonal jobs for the local community including teaching positions and other posts involved with the schools development. http://www.campsinternational.com/gap/makongeni-project.php

A great amount has been achieved for this small community since 2003. All of it would not be possible without all of the help on the physical side and financial contributions made by generous visitors. Last summer Camp Kenya spent 1.5 million on projects, material and wages for the local people. http://www.campsinternational.com/gap/makongeni-project.php

Work includes:
•   Renovation and improvement of two class rooms and an office for head of the school, work also included work on structural repairs, internal improvements such as painting and new doors and windows
•   More renovations another building.
•   The building of a nursery school right from the foundations, construction to doors, windows and painting and artwork!
