Over the years, Volvo has been the leading innovator of technology for protecting its passengers. In their most recent development, Volvo has addressed and conquered the grey-area of seatbelt safety that is presented when small children have outgrown their car seats, yet are not big enough to be protected by an adult seatbelt alone.
In usual fashion, Volvo has further customized its safety features for children at this unique stage by creating an unprecedented two-step booster that can be built into the rear seats of almost all Volvo SUV and wagon models. Available at East Hanover’s Prestige Volvo, this novel technology recently received Popular Science’s annual Best of What’s New award, after being deemed number one out of 100 best new technologies.

Volvo’s new booster promotes child safety from many angles, focusing on eliminating common areas of ineffectiveness and misuses by changing children’s attitude towards boosters and simultaneously increasing their effectiveness. The new booster is more accommodating for bigger children due to design features such as the booster being built in, more comfortable, and larger. "We took into account the child's physical size and weight, seat belt misuse, child physiology, along with redesigning our vehicle side body structure and side impact inflatable curtain to come up with this new integrated two-step booster seat," noted Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Corporation. "There will be better fitment of our three-point seat belt, a wider age and weight range, and better attitude for the child who can now easily see outside with the added benefit of reducing driver distraction. Hopefully we will hear less often: 'Are we there yet?'"
These boosters are available at Prestige Volvo in as part of a package comprised of two boosters and pyrotechnically pretension seat belts, which allow them to be used for both children in the boosters and adults using the seatbelts alone. Seats with the booster option do not prevent the seats from folding flat to provide extra rear cargo room, and are additionally indistinguishable from seats without boosters.
