Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia
The fourth World Youth Scrabble Championship will take place December 8-10 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, with seats allocated to Gulf countries. Johor Bahru will also be the venue for the 10th World Scrabble Championship and the eighth Causeway Challenge in the just the preceding weeks.
“It’s highly recommended that competitors also consider playing in the Causeway Open event,” said Karen Richards, youth committee chair of the World English-language Scrabble Players Association and WYSC organiser. Open to entrants born January 1, 1992, or later, WYSC entry is based on national quotas established for each country.
“I visited Britain early this year with the goal of running a WYSC in that area of the world instead of Asia,” Richards said. However, there aren’t yet enough young British players to make that feasible.”
“At present, the masses of young players are located in Asia with their numbers and quality improving every year so it makes more sense to keep the event in that region for a few more years until some other countries catch up on their youth promotions,”
Johor Bahru, a town just across the causeway from Singapore, will become a Scrabble capital of sorts, as several other international competitions are scheduled there in the November-December period.
