The old adage "Eat this it will make you feel better" will take on a whole new meaning when the area's top chefs gather to re master classic dishes and to raise money that will help feed local families. The event's co chairs Rick Reynolds, Executive Director of Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce and chef Ian Smith are excited with this year's theme. "This is the perfect year for us to focus on Comfort Food", remarked Reynolds, " dishes that remind you of places and people that are near to your heart".
The Taste of Southern Ocean Hunger Relief Dinner is organized by a group of dedicated business and community members whose main focus is raising money and awareness for the seven food pantries located in Lacey Township, Waretown, Manahawkin, Barnegat, Tuckerton and Long Beach Island. Last year the event raised a record $50000 and much needed support to these local pantries. "The demand on the pantries have increased dramatically in the past year", states Reynolds "It is imperative that the Taste dinner is successful and so we can raise the contribution in 2009". Businesses and the community are urged to consider sponsoring at one of the many levels, donating to the auction or attending the dinner that will be held at the Sea Oaks Country Club.
The ticket price remains the same as 2008 at $125 per person and includes a evening of culinary masterpieces inspired and prepared by a number of talented chefs. This year's theme "Contemporary Comfort Food" is guaranteed to satisify all attendees, "Plan to be pleasantly surprised on the innovative way classic dishes will be served", notes Chef Ian Smith, "traditional recipes will be taken to the next level." In addition to food, good will is also served through a silent and live auction. The gift donations have started coming in which span from the practical to the luxurious; included is a $2500 landscape from Reynolds Garden Center as well as NY Giant sport memorabilia, dine around opportunities, and golf foursomes.
"At the end of the day, everything goes back to the members in the community that need it the most," adds Reynolds "families need to eat and the local pantries need this money to help them."
