State Building is much in the news these days. From Iraq and Afghanistan to Somalia and the Congo, the United States and the rest of the international community seek to stabilize fragile regimes and foster economic growth. Yet, fractured societies and weak governments combine to frustrate these efforts.
Why is state building so difficult? Is there anything in our approach that might be improved?
Seth Kaplan, author of Fixing Fragile States: A New Paradigm for Development (Praeger Security International, 2008) will discuss “The Challenges of State Building” on March 15th at 1100 AM at the Ethical Culture Society of Essex County in Maplewood, New Jersey.
