A man’s dream, to find a way for scuba divers to brand their names on their gear, is finally a reality.
Now, after years of development, John Wynne is rolling out his patented dream invention, called Fastencil, into the aisles and onto the web sites of scuba stores across the country. His invention makes it possible for anyone to permanently brand their name, with expert results, on all of their fabric scuba gear, such as wet suits, BCD’s, gear bags, hoods, and more.
“On a dive boat or crowded beach all dive gear looks similar, so it needs a name or ID on it to prevent loss and theft”, said Wynne. “I realized that there wasn’t a practical and inexpensive way for people to get their names on their scuba gear– especially their fabric items.” “The ID had to be permanent and waterproof but I also felt that it should be visually pleasing and professional looking. Divers often use felt-tip markers or paint squeeze bottles to put their names on things but they don’t work very well. They fade or rub off and also end up looking more like graffiti than custom imprinting.”
Setting out to make his dream a reality, Wynne, a former teacher said, “The challenge of making the invention simple and easy-to-use was really the difficult part. Applying names to items has always been a task reserved for skilled professionals, requiring high tech equipment, exact measurements, centering, etc.” Wynne was determined, however, saying, “I was intent on making it so user-friendly and so forgiving of mistakes that anyone could do it perfectly with expert results - the very first time.” Asked if he was satisfied that he had accomplished that goal, Wynne said emphatically, “ Yes! Every time I see the smile on the face of someone who just put their name on their gear with Fastencil for the first time.”
Fastencil is reusable and sells for around $9.95. It comes in a kit and includes: simple directions, three sheets of stencils, stencil holder, waterproof paints and applicator. The kit can do over twelve scuba fabric items such as: wet suits, BCD’s, booties, gear bags, hoods, gloves, and more. It takes a couple minutes to set up and do the first name. Subsequent names can be done in about 30 seconds. “end”
