Primary Care Model A Dentistry Disaster, Claim Experts

In recent years, primary health and dental care have become increasingly intertwined, especially since the Primary Care Act of 1997...

PRLog (Press Release) - Mar 02, 2009 -
...now dental experts everywhere are warning that dental practices joining the primary care model, could be making a costly mistake.

Dr. Bhavna Doshi, Extreme Makeover dentist, international lecturer and CEO of Dental WEALTH Builder, said, “Primary dentistry has always differed from primary health care in that many dentists are well established outside of the NHS, and there is a huge debate at the current time into whether dental practice management teams should join the NHS or go it alone.”

One of the main factors effecting dental practice management teams, in the private sector are The NICE guidelines. The Hygiene Code in the Health Act has already had a negative impact on private dental practices, and many fear that the replacement of The Healthcare Commission will only increase their worry.

Dr Doshi added, “There are pro’s and cons for each option, but many dental practices are opting to go private, as it gives them much more freedom, they can run the practice according to their personal preferences and in some cases make much more money, especially if the dental practice is already well established.”

For dental practices seeking that added security of getting customers through the door, the NHS is a sure fire thing, but you are able to tailor the services you provide and charge as much as you want to if running a practice privately.  For aesthetic dentists wanting to specialise in a particular procedure, going private may be the only option.  That way it is possible to offer bang on trend treatments like tooth whitening and tooth implants, which many NHS practices are unable to do.

Dr Doshi added, “Whichever option you go for bear in mind that, a strong management team will ensure business practices are carried out thoroughly and effectively, while also ensuring staff are motivated and keep on top of the overall goals. In order for your practice to thrive whether in the private or public sector, the level of customer service must be excellent. This can be provided by your staff, as long as they have the right level of managerial support, motivation and inspiration, and remember marketing is essential.”
