Feb. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- With a growing trend of eco-friendly products on the market from solar self charging cell phones to smart cars, most people are trying to do their part to save our planet.
A lot of them are cutting back on power consumption or saving water, what most swimming pool owners do not  know is swimming pools can be green too ( no I am not talking about algae in the water)
There are many products on the market that can make a pool more eco-friendly and help cut back on energy bills and save water too. I will cover most in this article to educate all you pool owners out there.

Let’s start with the biggest source of free energy on the planet, the sun. The sun can be used a lot around your pool but has a also has a byproduct evaporation of your pool water.
There has been a product on the market for about 30 years now that is nontoxic and biodegradable that does two things for your pool. The first is it will slow down the evaporation
of the water (They also use this on irrigation ponds on farms) The second thing is a byproduct of the first, it slows down the heat loss keeping the pool warmer. For more product info

Now for the next part of the power of the sun, free heat. For years now people have used the sun to heat their pools using solar heat. What you might not know is the
US department of energy says solar pool heating is the most efficient use of solar energy there is ( yep, that’s right beats solar electricity production).Have you ever been on top of a roof in
the middle of  summer? Then you know the temperature can reach over 140 degrees. Why not put that heat in the pool? Solar panels are not that much and will pay for them selves in about 2 years.
They are easy to install and can be used to pre heat the water before conventional gas or electric pool heater to keep the gas and power bills lower. There are many types on the market and have many
Installation options from roof tops to on the ground. If you have the room, why not get free heat and lower your bills, right? The cost for a 40,000 gallon pool (about 20x40 ft & 8 ft deep end) is about
$2000 installed. For more info click here  http://www.poolcenter.com/solar_pool_heating.htm.

Solar swimming pool blankets have been out for a long time now and stop heat loss and help to build up the solar heat in your pool. They are a thicker version of bubble packing that you can cut
To the shape of your pool. A variation of this product is the solar sun ring that is a 5 foot  round in shape and link up with each other via magnet. Many people think they are easier to remove and store over
a large pool sized piece of plastic. They are raise the water temperature up to 10 degrees.  Roof top solar heaters can be used with them to maximize the heat you can put into the pool water.

Free electricity for your pool pump? Yep, the newest is solar powered pool pump kits. Although they just are hitting the market and cost a bit, I can see them taking off soon in popularity.
I can see pool builders putting them in so they do not have to run a power line to the pool equipment. From what I have seen you only need a solar electric panel that is about 4 by 5 feet in size.
Defiantly keep and eye on this item and the cost to come down. The average cost for a 1 horse power pump is over $1300 per year and more in a lot of places (ouch).

What can you do to save electricity and lower costs and “green” your pool? Well there are a number of things you can do. Do you have a timer on your pump? Adding a timer on your pool pump and running it on off peak hours can save you a lot of money. Times are a low cost a good timer will run about a $100 but can save you hundreds of dollars per year!!! Timers can range from $50 to thousands depending on how many things you want it to operate and from where. You can get data links for a PC and operate things VIA the internet as well as by cell phone..For energy saving timers and more info click here http://www.poolcenter.com/timers_automation.htm

The next generation pool motor has arrived from Pentair / Sta-rite  !!!!!  These pumps will WOW you. They use up to  1/5th the kilowatts of a standard pool pump. With that said , they will save the home owner
Hundreds of dollars a year on energy use and costs. Many states and power companies offer huge rebates on them ( $400 from the Pacific Gas and Electric  in California) just for putting less strain on the power grids.
They do not sacrifice flow. They have the same output of a standard pump and can be programmed for your pool size. These will set you back at first but will pay for it self  in about a year and a half .
Pentair has a great pump cost calculator here http://www.pentairpool.com/pool_pump_calc/index.htm  . You can enter in your current rates and it will tell you the savings per your you will pocket.
I can see laws in the future and huge incentives on this technology . The are the only company on the market that has it and what better company then the worlds largest swimming pool manufacture Pentair./ Sta-rite.
