Integrating History and Art, New Hands-On Resource Helps Teachers of Ancient History

What was Moses wearing when he led the Hebrews out of Egypt? How can Hannibal have used an elephant as a weapon in battle? What are those mysterious objects King Narmer of Egypt is holding?

Feb. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- Can a child of the 21st century imagine the way people lived 2000 or 3000 years ago? This world without power tools, cars or electronic devices, a world of small remote settlements with vast open or wooded areas between them—still managed to spawn such incredible feats of engineering as the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Giza!

Now, students (age 6 to 12) can make these distant civilizations come alive. Famous Figures of Ancient Times: Movable Paper Figures to Cut, Color, and Assemble allows children to perform their own historical re-enactments, or even create new stories using famous people from ancient times. The activity book presents 20 historical figures—kings, generals, philosophers, religious leaders, scholars, and one elephant—in both pre-colored and color-them-in versions, to cut out and assemble into moveable action figures. A brief biographical note on each figure is also included, along with a list of resources.

“Famous Figures of Ancient Times is a consumable book of colorful, movable paper figures that any parent or child can put together...a wonderful supplement for any ancient history curriculum, as well as a simple source of rainy day fun, Famous Figures of Ancient Times is highly recommended.”—Midwest Book Review, Oregon, Wisconsin.

“Great for kids who like crafts: detailed, colored figures from history, from Narmer to Augustine, to cut out and assemble. The figures are on cardstock with moveable joints. Good for decorating time lines or just for fun.”—Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise, in The Well Trained Mind (3rd Ed. W.W. Norton), Charles City, Virginia.

Famous Figures of Ancient Times: Movable Paper Figures to Cut, Color, and Assemble (pub date April 2009) is the first in a series of cut-and-color moveable action-figure history books from Figures In Motion; other books will feature famous people from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the U.S., and the Bible, as well as movable Dinosaur and Wild Animal books.

The books are the latest from airbrush artist Cathy Diez-Luckie, illustrator of Goodbye Goose and several other children’s books, and contributor to two illustration encyclopedias and several magazines. Trained at the Toledo Museum of Art and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Diez-Luckie also holds a graduate degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University.
