Balcony Systems’ innovative curved sliding glass and aluminium patio doors have been used in the extensive renovation and extension of an imposing mansion overlooking Scotland’s dramatic west coast.
The 77-year-old Ayrshire property underwent complete refurbishment, which included the building of a large ground floor garden room to take advantage of the magnificent sea views.
Balcony’s unique curved patio door system proved the ideal solution for the architect’s curved façade design. The extraordinary design of the façade spans 16.0m overall with a full 8.6m length semi circle and two straight 3.7m sets on each end. There are five curved sections of which two slide and three are fixed. At 2.25 metres high these allow in maximum light and uninterrupted views across the golf course to the Firth of Clyde beyond.
Project architects James Houston Architects specified the Balcony Visio Glide 100
extruded aluminium polyester powder-coated profiles with curved glazed units. The installation complements the 1930s character of the original mansion and the property’s new extension, complete with period tiled floor and precast stone outside columns.
“Balcony supplied the specialist solution we were looking for in terms of a curved design that could be opened up on a warm summer’s day,” explains architect James Houston. “They helped us with technical aspects and the whole installation went very smoothly. We had never seen anything like it before on the British market and it is certainly a system we would use again in the future.”
