New 3G Phone Technology - Phones.org.nz Asks 'Will the New Zealand Copyright Law effect Phones?'

The New Zealand Government is in the process of implementing a new copyright law in early 2009 which would force the removal of material from NZ websites following any accusation of breach of copyright.

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 23, 2009 -
The popularity of 3G networks with internet capable phones would be greatly effected by what they can and can't see on their phones.  Mobiles.org.nz helps individuals by providing extensive information on the New Zealand mobiles market.

According to the Creative Freedom Foundation, soon to be amended Sections 92A and C of the New Zealand Copyright Act of 1994 establish a guilt upon accusation principle that could see anyone accused of “copyright infringement”, resulting in his or her Internet connection being severed.  The popularity of Internet ready 3G capable phones is extensive for a small country like New Zealand and NZ was specifically chosen as one of the first countries to launch the new Apple iPhone 3G.

Online communication is also becoming more popular on mobiles, offering greater convenience and portability to previous methods of Internet access. The growing prevalence of 3G mobiles in New Zealand suggests that mobile phones could potentially be preferred even more than in the U.S. One factor that could be behind greater popularity is how wireless technology infrastructure is commonplace within New Zealand.

The impact of the new copyright law would be far-reaching as it has the potential of terminating phone internet connections and websites without evidence and without punishment for any false accusations of Copyright infringement.

In New Zealand, an internet blackout has already taken place as the community protests as well as 200 people protested at parliament and presented United Future leader Peter Dunne with an online petition signed by 10,000 people.  Prominent celebrities such as Stephen Fry have highlighted the copyright's failings and have "twittered" it's failings.  Those promoting the clause say it will effectively police widespread copyright abuse on the internet.

As mobiles are becoming ever more dominant, they have become an important part of business and social life.  The potential restriction on viewing content over the internet would be far reaching, so it is important to keep up to date with the latest information, which Mobiles.org.nz provides. Giles Dawe, writer of the site says, "This site aims to help the average Kiwi to get their head around everything on offer for mobiles today."

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the world of the mobile phone industry and information on NZ related copyright issues is the best way to keep aware of the many advances in mobile phone technology.
