FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 23, 2009 -
New Years has come and gone, and for most gastric bypass, Lap Band and REALIZE Band patients so have the weight loss resolutions they set for themselves in 2009.

“Now is the time to re-evaluate your resolutions, not to give up,” says Karen Kelly, New Jersey Bariatric Center ‘s Registered Dietian.  “We often resolve to change things in our lives we have no intention or desire to really change, which provides us with a sense of failure before we’ve even started.  In order to make a resolution stick it’s important to not only make a resolution, but evaluate how that will affect our lives and what we’ll need to change to make it happen.”

The New Jersey Bariatric Center offers five tips to put yourself on track:

Tip #1:  Develop a Strategy
When you resolve to make a change, pair it with a strategy on how you’re going to make the change. Simply saying you want to do something does not fuel the change.  For success, outline a plan of how you’re going to change the behavior that is simple and realistic.

Tip #2:  Keep Resolutions to a Minimum
Attempting to stop or start multiple resolutions will only overwhelm you and prevent you from completing any of them.  To many resolutions equals too much pressure you’re putting on yourself, which will make change difficult.

Tip #3: Find An Accountability Partner
Lock in someone who will support your change. For example, if your goal is to exercise, consider hiring a personal trainer or finding a workout partner. A study at McMaster University found that people who are new to an exercise program perform better when their goals are set by a fitness professional rather than by themselves.

Tip #4:  Appreciate Success
Appreciate the mini milestones you reach and reward yourself for the small successes and hard work you’ve put in. When you keep your goals simple, it’s easier to see success and progress.

Tip #5:  Have a Plan to Manage Stress
Many resolutions center around things we do to help us cope with stress, such as smoking, drinking or overeating. When we change the behaviors, we need a new plan to manage stress.
