FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Feb 22, 2009 – The technological advances in Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) jointly developed by Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and its partners from the wireless communications industry have drawn remarkable attention at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world's largest exhibition and most significant event for the mobile industry which was held in Barcelona, Spain from 16 to 19 February 2009.

ASTRI showed its TD-LTE capabilities by jointly conducting four sets of demonstrations respectively with PicoChip from UK, a leading supplier of femtocell technology; Innofidei, a leading wireless IC supplier in China; Agilent Technologies from US and Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) from Germany, leaders in the test and measurement solutions market.

ASTRI is the first in industry to demonstrate the 3GPP TD-LTE terminal and femtocell supporting TD-LTE terminal MIMO function and base station MIMO function respectively. It is also among the first to demonstrate high definition video streaming plus live video stream over MIMO TD-LTE link. Furthermore, ASTRI has supported Agilent and R&S to achieve their first TD-LTE femtocell MIMO testing and TD-LTE terminal MIMO testing respectively.

"We are excited about the joint demos of our TD-LTE capabilities with picoChip, R&S, Agilent and Innofidei. We are totally committed to partnering with leading players globally on the LTE roadmap," said Dr Chin-Lin I, Vice President and Group Director of ASTRI's Communications Technologies Group. "We are presently working with industry leaders to address the LTE core functionality and performance requirements that meet the needs of the markets and to create high-quality design for the TD-LTE market. We also work very hard to make sure that our innovation will help to accelerate the product development and improving development efficiency."

ASTRI is hailed as one of the frontrunners in the world in advancing TD-LTE technologies and Asia's leading research and development organization in wireless communications and multimode Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based technologies. By leveraging on the OFDM and practical MIMO technologies developed in-house, ASTRI's engineers have built the core TD-LTE technologies that can be used in both TD-LTE terminal and TD-LTE femtocell, or home base station, designs. Its demonstrations at MWC constituted a significant milestone for ASTRI along the line.

"ASTRI's mission is to deliver world class innovations for customer-focused impact. Our effort in ASTRI is propelling Hong Kong to become a pioneering power house delivering the most advanced technologies," said Dr I.

LTE is the wireless communication standard beyond 3G defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a standard body of the telecommunications industry. It provides significantly increased data rate and short latency using OFDM and MIMO technologies. There are two modes in LTE, namely, Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD). The industry expects that LTE technologies will enable the seamless migration of Internet applications in mobile networks.
