=======================================================================

(Berkeley County, SC)  The Berkeley County Council proclaimed March 2009 as “Berkeley Reads Month” at its February 9th meeting. Berkeley County residents will share the joy of reading in March as “Berkeley Reads” (formerly One Book Berkeley) embarks on its second annual community reading program. The 2009 selections will have the county wondering “Whodunit?” as they turn the pages of one of the five mystery books selected.
   The Berkeley Reads program is sponsored by the Friends of the Berkeley County Library in conjunction with the Berkeley County Library System and the Berkeley County Schools. This program is designed to get the community to read one or more of the books and attend special events and book discussions at their local libraries.
   Community reading programs foster a love of reading and aid in the fight against illiteracy. How? By people enjoying reading and talking about a book together.  A recent editorial in the Post and Courier cited Berkeley County’s illiteracy rate among adults as 15%. We hope that we can work to reduce that number in the future. We want to encourage people of all ages to enjoy reading.
   Last year, Berkeley County’s inaugural community reading program began with Marley and Me. Residents of all ages delighted in the story of a not-so-obedient yellow lab. The story is now a major motion picture.

   This year, the theme is “Mysteries.” The committee has chosen five books for the community to read:
   The adult fiction selection is The Hunt Club, by Charleston native and New York Times bestselling author, Bret Lott. This page turner, set right here in the          Lowcountry, is described by its author as “a redneck on redneck crime spree.”
   A non-fiction selection, The Science of Sherlock Holmes, by E. J. Wagner, is sure to be popular with CSI devotees, as well as anyone who has enjoyed the Great Detective’s stories.

   With the help of the Berkeley County Schools, mystery books have been chosen for younger students as well:
   The youngest of detectives will enjoy Where’s the Big Bad Wolf? by Eileen Christelow It is a three little pigs story with a different spin that keeps everyone guessing.
   Intermediate elementary students will get a taste of a real mystery in the non-fiction book The Mary Celeste: an unsolved mystery from history by Jane Yolen and Heidi Elisabet Yolen Stemple. The authors tell the true story of a ship, the Mary Celeste, discovered adrift in the open sea in 1872 with no sign of captain or crew. Amateur detectives will study the clues to this still unsolved mystery.
   Finally, middle school students, and adults as well, will travel to the canals and streets of Venice, Italy as they read The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke. There a band of street children embark on a mysterious journey that unlocks a fantastic secret.

   The Friends of the Library will have copies available for sale at discounted prices.  You can buy a copy of The Hunt Club; The Science of Sherlock Holmes or Where’s the Big Bad Wolf? for $10; The Thief Lord or The Mary Celeste for $5 at any Berkeley County Library branch. Copies of these books will also be available for checkout at all of the library branches with a Berkeley County library card.
