Houston, TX — Smart MultiMedia, a leader in providing the most recent high definition laser scanning and 3D acquisition technology currently available, has stepped into the archaeological arena, beginning with the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
On December 26, 2008, the Smart MultiMedia crew headed to San Antonio, Texas to aid in the preservation strategies for the Alamo, the most famous of the Spanish missions in the State of Texas. Previously preservationists have had to rely on photographs and tedious surveying and measuring to document changes in the building, though now Smart MultiMedia’s Leica HDS6000 Laser Scanner will do the trick in a fraction of the time and at the most precise measurements available – over 500,000 individual measurements per second with a modeled surface precision of 2mm at 25 meters. These “point clouds” can then be used to create computer aided design (CAD) drawings and 3D models of the structure. The Leica HD Scanner literally collects hundreds of millions of datapoints in just a few hours.
Smart MultiMedia provides scanning and modeling services for a variety of clients: hospitals, architectural firms, chemical companies, entertainment companies and more, though scanning the Alamo is the first of what the company states is a series of historical projects in Texas and beyond. "There are so many historic buildings, churches, missions, homes - you name it - that are in dire need of documentation. Through the use of laser scanning we can accurately create a ‘3D snapshot’ if you will, that can provide current and future preservationists an invaluable tool for them to do their job," says Richard Lasater, Smart MultiMedia Vice President Program Development.
Measurement recording scans of this caliber are still considered a new and very recent technology. “This instrument provides a level of accuracy and speed that is unparalleled. We predict that in the coming years 3D high definition laser scanning will be the industry standard. We are excited to be in on the ground floor and having the opportunity to take part in such projects as scanning the Alamo” says Douglas Smith, Smart MultiMedia Vice President of Public Programs. “We are also working with Texas Parks and Wildlife scanning off exhibit areas of the Battleship Texas, which is just as exciting and challenging as scanning the Alamo.”
