As the recent fires raged in Australia, a small group in northeastern Oklahoma continued preparations for a special disaster training conference in June. And as the tragic headlines continued to roll in, members of Strategic World Impact (SWI) were reminded of the importance of the upcoming event and the need for such training.
Beginning June 14, 2009, SWI will offer a week-long Disaster Assistance Response Training (DART) Conference in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The one-of-a-kind event will provide critical training to missionaries, relief workers, first responders and anyone else who deals with domestic or international disasters and crisis situations.
“The need for prepared first responders cannot be overstated,”
“And the most recent event in Australia underscores the need for this type of training,” he adds.
Courses offered will include Disaster Assessment, Trauma Counseling, Cross Cultural Communications, Disaster Medic Training and Survival in the Field as well as other areas that focus on aspects of missionary and relief work service.
Included in the training will also be an overnight stay in a simulated refugee camp. This allows attendees to receive hands-on training and sleep overnight in a mock camp, highlighting some of the issues that displaced people may have to encounter.
Whether it’s a fire in Australia, a tsunami in Indonesia or a hurricane in New Orleans, Strategic World Impact is stressing the importance of preparing for such events and encouraging those considering attending to register early.
There is an “early bird” sign-up period until April 1st, which reduces the cost of the conference by $200.
After April 1st, the cost increases by $100, then increases again after May 15th. Group, family and alumni discounts are also being offered.
