GMSI announces publicly today that it is currently developing Salgix 5. Salgix is the GNU/Linux-based operating system developed by GMSI specifically for use on its line of Visual Workstations.
Salgix 5 marks the first 64-bit version of Salgix to be publicly available. This new feature allows GMSI's newest machines, specifically the GMSI Ocean, to take advantage of much more system memory than ever before.
Previous versions of Salgix relied on a processor-based technology called PAE to use up to 32 GB of RAM on its line of computer systems. With this new release, Salgix can theoretically use up to 256 TB of system memory.
"This is a feature that our customers wanted us to tackle before it becomes a problem" says John Knight, co-founder of GMSI. "It became clear after listening to our customers needs that they all wanted to use our machines long term and as such, had to plan long term. In the future, the amount of system memory we are limited to will be bound to the silicon the system is comprised of."
The new version of Salgix also improves on a number of other features such as improved integration with GMSI's system management platform named Prism. Continuing its success with NVIDIA's hardware and software platforms, Salgix 5 will be the first version of Salgix to officially support the new OpenGL 3.0 spec as certified by the Kronos Group.
GMSI plans to ship Salgix 5 in the 2nd quarter of 2009. Salgix will be available in source code format or as a binary package bundled in with its hardware offerings, such as the Curve workstation and Ocean high-performance visual computing servers.
