In times past there has been a lot of publicity about those who have learned to paint with their feet, but Jessica Cox, with no arms, is an absolute inspiration. Jessica has earned the right to fly a plane, using only her feet to control the machine. For her the words ‘can’t and impossible’, have no meaning.
Just twenty-five years old, Jessica, from Tucson, Arizona, was born with a bilateral congenital limb deficiency, that left her without arms. A defect that has left doctors mystified. Jessica refused to use any prosthetic aid and from a very young age set out to prove to the world, nothing was out of bounds.
Jessica became the first pilot without arms, to be awarded a license to fly a light-sport aircraft to altitudes of 10,000 feet. That is not all Jessica has achieved. She also has two black belts in Tae Kwan-Do, a college degree in psychology and pursues a flourishing career as a motivational speaker. Jessica drives a car, puts on makeup, brushes her long black hair and types 25 words a minute . This is all without the help of any man-made devices. Right from the star, Jessica learned that her feet would have to be her hands.
Jessica’s cherry smile stops one from noticing any disability. “I highly encourage people with disabilities to consider flying", says Jessica. “It helps reverse the stereotype that people with disabilities are hampered. It turns them from feeling they are powerless, into the belief that they are capable of setting high goals and achieving them".
North Carolina Able Flight training company specializes in assisting people with disabilities, to learn to fly. Jessica was able to obtain her license free of charge, having won an Able Flight scholarship.
The next time you begin to grumble about something, take a few minutes out to think about a woman with no arms. Jessica climbs into the plane, in sexy high heel shoes, totally unaware that she could be seen as being unique.
