The Meaning of Dreams is Controversial in Marvin Rosen’s New Book

There’s a thin line between fantasy and reality in Marvin Rosen’s new book Shrink: Odyssey of a Therapist.

Feb. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Marvin Rosen's new book Shrink: Odyssey of a Therapist is comprised of two books, Book One – Nightmare and Book Two – Soul Search. Book One describes main character Morrie Schwartz's encounter with passive and under-assertive patient James O'Malley. A displaced dairy farmer from upstate Pennsylvania, he begins experiencing violent dreams. Placed on a psych ward for attacking Morrie, Morrie must testify against him in court. The case arouses psychological conflict in Morrie because of philosophical, treatment and ethical issues. In Book Two, Morrie begins to experience a series of paranormal incidents and out-of-body wanderings and when his own emotional balance becomes questionable, he is placed in a psychiatric facility.

Whether or not dreams have meaning is controversial. Some scientists believe that dreams are merely neurological noise produced by a sleeping brain. Yet many therapists insist that dreams have significance in revealing personality dynamics and can be used effectively in psychotherapy. The thin line between fantasy and reality becomes apparent as Morrie's own psychological health becomes questionable.
