The GCE Advanced (A) Level examination is an internationally recognised examination set by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The results scored for this examination is often used by students to gain entry to various universities and tertiary institutions of many countries.

Students who have taken the A Level course should have been equipped to organise and analyse data, facts and information. They ought to be creative and think critically on a given topic. This is because the A Level curriculum allows students the flexibility of taking multi-disciplinary subjects to broaden a student’s knowledge to prepare them to engage working life.

In Singapore, the A level examination is taken by students during the second year of the Junior College (JC) or third year of the Central Institute (CI). The examination usually begins in October and the results will be released in March the next year. Students enrolled for the A level Preparatory Course will take the examination as a private candidate. As almost all the examinable subjects are in English, students who did not learn English as a first language may encounter some difficulties in this examination. They have a shorter time to prepare for this examination compared to the students in local schools.

Students are required to take at least 6 subjects. Subjects may also be divided into Science, Arts or Commerce subjects. Apart from the compulsory subjects of General Paper and Mother Tongue, students have to take 3 H2 subjects and 1 H1 subject. The terms “H1” and “H2” indicate the level of difficulty for a particular subject where “H2” indicates a more difficult level. All content covered in the various subjects is based on the syllabus laid down by the Ministry of Education in Singapore.

Pre-requisites
All students must take a proficiency test to show that his or her proficiency level in English is at least at Upper Secondary level. Otherwise, he or she must undergo our full-time intensive Preparatory Course (English only) before another assessment is made.

Students must evidence proficiency in Chinese before they can take Chinese Language & Literature (H2) or General Studies in Chinese (H1).

The student must have completed high school education and be at least 17 but not more than 23 years old to be eligible to take the GCE ‘A’ Level examination.

Course Details
