Feb. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- Jessica Simpson just announced that she is going to drop 20 pounds in 8 weeks.  Josef Brandenburg from TheBodyYouWant.com says, “anyone can drop 20 pounds of fat in 8 weeks and keep it off, if they just understand a few important principles.”

#1.  Forget the aerobics:  We’ve known for at least 15 years that steady state aerobic exercise is almost completely worthless for fat-loss.  According to the journal Obesity a woman doing 6 hours of aerobics per week will barely drop 4lbs over the course of a year.  So, in 8 weeks of jogging you’d only drop about 10 ounces of fat.

#2.  Get metabolic:  Take the time that you normally would have wasted on the treadmill and head to the weight room.  Pick an upper and a lower body exercise – a squat and a push-up for example.  Perform 12 reps of the lower body exercise, then immediately perform 12 reps of the upper body one.  Rest for a minute and repeat.  This is called “metabolic resistance training” and it has been shown to elevate your metabolism for at least 36 hours to come.

#3.  Go faster:  Every calorie burned during high intensity interval training seems to strip away 900% more fat than a calorie burned during a regular aerobic work according to the journal Metabolism.  Here’s how Josef says to do it, “Pick any form of cardio, warm-up, then go all-out for 60sec.  You should be huffing and puffing and cursing me at this point.  Back off for 2 minutes.  Then haul ass again.  Repeat this for a total of 4 rounds.  You will have burned a ton of calories and revved up your metabolism for many hours to come.”

#4.  Cut the carbs:  The verdict has been in for at least a century – when it comes to fat loss you will drop 75-100% more fat on a low-carb diet vs. a low-fat diet.  What’s more is that most people will have more energy and less hunger with a low carb diet.  The food pyramid is based on tradition, not results.

#5.  Forget the scale:  Dropping 20lbs of body-fat is NOT the same thing as dropping 20lbs on the scale.  What you really care about is looking good naked, and having your clothes fit again.  Track your progress with a tape measure and/or body-fat calipers.  “If you drop 20 pounds of fat and gain 10 pounds of muscle, you will look like you dropped 30, but you’ll only have dropped 10 on the scale,” says Brandenburg.
