It's not all bad news out there.  While talk of recession swirls around on every side, some companies are experiencing significant growth as well.  One example is the online nutrition company Vitabot.  Vitabot was initially created by Joseph Graves, an electrical, aerospace and space robotics engineer who was a lead engineer on the Ranger NBV project for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  His work on the Ranger project, a large 2000 lb. robot designed to build space stations and perform maintenance on the Hubble Space Telescope, led him to create a spin-off technology company which uses artificial intelligence from robotics to solve the nutrition problem in a whole new way.

Vitabot's new approach, which applies the most advanced data on nutrition from the Institute of Institute of Medicine through a very user-friendly interface, has gained incredible traction in corporate wellness and in the health club industry due to it's focus on complete nutrition instead of “weight loss at any cost”.  "Vitabot's origins in technology allows it to bring the full richness of the research to the people in a way that can really affect their lives." Graves said.  In fact, Graves own brother, while testing the system during initial development, lost nearly 100 pounds.  He has continued to use the system remaining at his goal weight for the past 4 years.  Their has been much critical acclaim for the system as well.  Much of the story of Nashville Star winner Melissa Lawson (country music's American Idol) focused on her weight loss over the duration of the show, which she openly  attributes to her use of Vitabot provided to her by her health club.

Vitabot has become an industry-standard for health clubs, and their corporate wellness expansion has brought in names such as HBO, and Warner Brothers Studios.  When the US Military discovered Vitabot's new comprehensive approach to nutrition, extensive testing lead the system to gain the approval of the Pentagon, and it is now being rolled out at bases around the world to improve the nutrition of our soldiers.

One of the reasons for Vitabot's success is its unique focus.  “The focus is not weight loss, but instead, tracking and improving nutrition.  By shifting the focus from weight loss to nutrition, we have been able to deliver incredible results for our users” Graves said.

The culture of the Vitabot company is strong on wellness, with most of its new employees losing about 15 lbs. during the first few months of employment without even really trying.  “we go for brisk walks every 2 hours or so, and exercise together at the end of the day...  and obviously, nutrition is central to our company.  When people feel better, they are more optimistic, focused and driven”, said Graves.

The new corporate headquarters, sized to support their continuing growth to house a staff of nearly 30 employees, is located outside of Washington DC, near the United States Department of Agriculture, and the University of Maryland.  "Companies are becoming more proactive in preventing poor health in their employees, and health clubs are trying to deliver complete packages for their member's success."  Graves said.  "Our goal is clear.  Bringing the most current, scientifically validated nutrition data to the people in a way that truly changes their lives.  With so much fad diet information floating around out there, the market for the truth has been incredible."
