These Days, It’s Back To Handmade! Independent Jewelry Design Has A New, Unique Voice.

When metalsmith Luana Pintea began selling out of her home-based studio in 2008, she had no idea that in less than a year the mass-produced market would tumble and high quality handmade jewelry would become, once again, a sought-after commodity.

When the times remind us to invest wisely, the jewelry industry is finding a new voice.  The high-end handmade revolution, which began a few years ago in places like Brooklyn and Portland, OR, is seeing a second rebirth.  Long gone are the days when the same mass-produced design dominated the market.  Today it’s all about being unique, smart, and standing out in the crowd.

Below 14th studio gets that.

For the last year, this small women-owned business has put hundreds of pieces around fingers and necks all over the world.  “We’ve had customers from every continent,” Luana says. “It’s humbling.  In the beginning, our work was available only through established online venues, like 1000 Markets or Etsy.  But now that we have our own returning customers, we are focusing more on our own website.”

The studio is small and bright; there are only two seats at the bench and no electrical machinery.  The right design and finish are achieved with care and skill alone.  Everything is hand-cut, filed and finished by hand.  Each order going out is wrapped carefully in recycled materials saved neatly in boxes: brown paper, yarn, light blue tissue.  Luana writes a hand-written note to each customer.  It’s back to basics and that’s just how everyone at Below 14th likes it.

The studio’s motto is “Wear your story” and by looking at this year’s collection, one can sense the playfulness and nostalgia behind the work: Art Details (reproductions in silver of famous works of art); Silver Tattoos; a set of New York City-inspired designs; and this month’s best-selling designs, the True Love necklace.

“I love the idea of making something for a stranger, and I like the idea of storytelling,” says Luana.  “My concern is always the same: to make something unique, something that tells a story to and for my customer.”
