The studio is small and bright; there are only two seats at the bench and no electrical machinery. The right design and finish are achieved with care and skill alone. Everything is hand-cut, filed and finished by hand. Each order going out is wrapped carefully in recycled materials saved neatly in boxes: brown paper, yarn, light blue tissue. Luana writes a hand-written note to each customer. It’s back to basics and that’s just how everyone at Below 14th likes it.
The studio’s motto is “Wear your story” and by looking at this year’s collection, one can sense the playfulness and nostalgia behind the work: Art Details (reproductions in silver of famous works of art); Silver Tattoos; a set of New York City-inspired designs; and this month’s best-selling designs, the True Love necklace.
