Foreign cars not registered with the DVLA could be seized
The amount of foreign registered vehicles in the UK is increasing all of the time, it is perfectly legal until they have been in the UK for six months, then they should be registered with the DVLA.
This problem goes further than just not being registered with DVLA, because it means that these vehicle owners can in theory, park where they like, go as fast as they like even through speed cameras and get away with the congestion charges. This is because the authorities cannot trace them.
PC David Lee from Northamptonshire Police, said: "This issue has been raised to us by the public and is something we are determined to tackle.
"If a vehicle is not registered with the DVLA it cannot be traced, so there is no way of making sure the vehicle is roadworthy and safe. It also means that if the owner of that car should commit a road offence they cannot be traced to answer that offence.
"If any members of the public believe they know of a foreign national vehicle that has been in residence in the UK longer than six months and has not been registered with the DVLA, I would urge them to contact our Drivewatch hotline 0800 174615."
There are serious implications here, as it also means that UK drivers could buy these foreign registered cars and get away with driving offences. However, there is going to be a clamp down on these cars, with the police and DVLA working together to note foreign registered cars and therefore keep track of them through the various systems.
