Certification was conveyed upon the company after an extensive assessment conducted by the Rainforest Alliance certification program, SmartWood, assuring that the company’s systems and procedures met stringent standards and compliance requirements.
Companies and organizations that purchase large volumes of paper for catalogs, brochures and other promotions have become increasingly aware of the impact their buying decisions have on the environment. Certification will permit DUKE to be responsive to its customers desire to use environmentally friendly papers and recognize their contribution to the environment by printing the “checkmark tree” logo to designate that specific paper came from responsibly managed forests. The tag assures consumers and signals the public that these materials are produced with responsible forest management in mind.

The Forest Stewardship Council is an international not-for-profit organization who supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forest. The Council and the standards it promotes serve to protect forests and their critical role in the ecosystem while allowing logging communities and wood-dependant industries to make a living.
Chain-of-Custody is the process of tracking and recording the possession and transfer of wood and fiber from the forests of origin, through the different stages of production, to the end user. While forests receive one kind of certification, all those who bring the wood to market receive a chain-of-custody certification to demonstrate they can verify responsible handling. Audits are conducted annually to make sure standards are being met.
