There has been overcapacity in China's steel industry now and the distribution of production is not reasonable. During the seven years from 2001 to 2007, the country's annual production capacity of steel increased from 150 million tons to 489 million tons. According to the projects in operation and under construction in 2008, the total production capacity of steel in China would reach 665 million tons in 2010, 100 million-odd tons more than the apparent consumption now.
The steel consuming center in China is the districts along the country's coastline which have a population of 500 million, with the apparent consumption per capita of 500-600 kg, about the same level in developed countries. Therefore the increase of demand in those districts would slow down in the future. On the other hand, as it is urbanizing and the living standards and ways of people there improving, hinterland, whose consumption of steel is still low, has great demand potential for steel.
Data from various industries shows, that construction industry accounts for 51% of China's consumption of steel. Adding in construction in other sectors, such as petrochemical, coal, power, railway and others, the steel used for construction sector should be 60-70 per cent of the country's total consumption. The market share of steel for construction purpose is expected to reduce to 49% by 2010. But since the demand of auto- and ship-making for steel will continue to increase in China in the next few years, the actual consumption of steel by construction would still stay at about 60% of the total.
China's demand for steel would hit the peak level during 2010 to 2012, and the steel consumption of the country would likely stay at a high level for a long time instead of falling rapidly after hitting the peak level because China is making great effort to build infrastructure including railways and highways, in addition to the demand of manufacturing for steel.
