Join Independence Visitor Center as the story and legacy of Harriet Tubman is brought to life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 10, 2009 -
Join Independence Visitor Center on Friday, February 20th, 2009, as the story and legacy of Harriet Tubman is brought to life. Meet the famous conductor of the Underground Railroad, known for making 19 trips in order to bring slaves to freedom. Listen to the storyteller describe the pursuits of former slaves who made the daring journey to freedom, such as Peter Still and Oney Judge and watch as Ms. Tubman amazes you with her true tales of struggle and sacrifice.

This is just one of several events taking place at the Independence Visitor Center during Black History month. Other activities include:

•   President Obama Day: On February 28th, from 11 am to 1 pm, watch as the five local youth perform their renditions of a President Obama speech. Youths, aged 4 – 18, are invited to submit a video of their best recitation of any of the now-famous speeches the President delivered during the course of his campaign. The winning renditions will participate in President Obama Day, receive an award and will also be featured on the Visitor Center’s website at www.IndependenceVisitorCenter.com/PresidentObamaDay.

Videos no longer than two minutes in length can be submitted on a CD-ROM and mailed to the Independence Visitor Center (Attn: President Obama Day, One North Independence Mall West, Philadelphia, PA 19106) or emailed to PresidentObama@IndependenceVisitorCenter.com. The deadline for submissions is February 18th, 2009.

•   Gwen Ifill Book Signing: The celebration continues on February 28th, from 5 pm to 7 pm, with a book reading and signing by Gwen Ifill of her newly-released book, The Breakthrough: Politics And Race In the Age Of Obama in Independence Ballroom. In her first book in a long and distinguished journalistic career, Ifill, surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama's stunning presidential victory and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.
