Vancouver, BC - In a petition presented to the Canadian Parliament, the AD-AV Society of BC urged the government to end funding of medical experiments on animals in favour of the nonviolent, more appropriate, ethical and reliable research methods already available. They also called for greater accountability from publicly funded researchers and higher standards of animal treatment more in line with those of EU members.
They pointed to mounting evidence that human biology-based technologies are more predictive of safety for humans. For example, tests in mice, rats, rabbits and dogs indicated that the painkiller Vioxx PROTECTS the heart - but it went on to kill many thousands of people through heart attacks and strokes. In another instance, The New England Journal of Medicine just this past week revealed further evidence of the link between HRT and an increased risk of breast cancer: this link was never suspected during testing, meaning countless women lost their lives based upon flawed scientific data.
While scientists continue to force animals to ingest or absorb massive doses of toxic, caustic and lethal substances in safety testing, we could instead be doing 30 years' worth of testing IN ONE AFTERNOON, with superior reliability, by studying cells from HUMAN organs at 15 different exposure levels.
"The age of personalized medicine could be realized very soon if we started funding the necessary research instead of wasting precious resources studying monkeys."
