Can drinking help your heart? It can if your beverage of choice is good quality tea and certain herbals. Western research studies point to the benefits of loose tea and herbals at the same time more people turn to infusions of natural products as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Teas and herbals offer benefits to many of the body’s system including the cardiovascular system. Black teas and hawthorn leaves with flowers are two excellent examples of heart healthy beverages, provided they are consumed on a regular basis. Hawthorn is a tree-like plant that produces leaves, flowers and berries all of which are used in infusions. A study by the German Federal Ministry of Health found that “hawthorn gently increases the strength of the heart, normalizes rhythm, and benefits circulation within the heart itself by dilating the coronary arteries.” Its effects are so well documented that the German equivalent of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed hawthorn to be sold as a pharmaceutical. According to the American Botanical Council, “Hawthorne is a great tonic to strengthen heart, help prevent atherosclerosis, help to increase blood flow to heart muscle, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.”
While tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water, teas and other infusions are not widely consumed by Americans as over 80% of itea consumed in the United States is iced tea. To celebrate American Heart Month, Souvia Tea will team up with the valley’s premier cardiovascular screening service Pro Active Health Screenings for an event on February 21st from 1:00pm until 3:00pm at 15414 N. 7th Street,#8 in Phoenix.
