Bring Attention to Your Entrance

First impressions are lasting impressions and most visitors’ first glimpse of a home is the hall.

Feb. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- First impressions are lasting impressions and most visitors’ first glimpse of a home is the hall. Often the room that receives the least attention in a home when it comes to interior design, your hall is not only the first thing people see of your house, it is also the last.

“While the hallway isn’t the most important room, it’s not one to be forgotten,” says Lesley Watt, Director of Obelisk Interiors, “and it’s definitely worth spending some time and money on.” The good news is that making an excellent first impression is relatively easy and inexpensive.

Lesley believes that the first thing to tackle is storage since halls in many households turn into a general dumping ground for coats, shoes, bags and umbrellas. “Make your hall as clutter-free as possible,” advises Lesley and suggests a console for small, but easily mislaid items such as wallets and phones; key holders; somewhere to put shoes, particularly important if your house is a shoe-free zone; and an umbrella stand.

Next, turn your interior design to decorating the walls. If your hall is small, be bold and paint one wall in a dark colour such as claret, gunmetal or russet. “Don’t be afraid of making the hall appear smaller with a dark colour,” says Lesley. “Not only does a dark colour bring sophistication to your hall, it also gives the visitor the impression that the rooms in the rest of the house are light and airy.”

Other design ideas for hall walls include feature paintings or a mirror – an excellent way to bring the sensation of light and space to a room as well as a practical addition. Lighting is, of course, paramount. “Getting the right lighting in a hall can be difficult,” says Lesley, “because too little can mean it’s gloomy, but too much light makes a hallway stark and uninviting.”
