Iowa City, IO – Lance Hood is the founder of Success Insiders.com, a website where self-made millionaires gather to network with new entrepreneurs and share their secrets of success.  They also share the stumbling blocks they met along the way, the mistakes they made and how to avoid them, and the methods that worked for them.  Matthias Schmelz was recently interviewed by Lance and he said that focusing on outbound activities first worked well for him.

Matthias explained outbound activities, using email as a very good example.  “Ask yourself how long you spend each day checking and responding to emails.  Some take hours to get through them all.  The successful manage this phenomenon by sending at least 10 emails every morning, before responding to those they received.  This allows you to accomplish some of your own work before thinking about what everyone else wants from you.  Emails and phone calls are often a request of your time and money.  Focusing too much of your time on these “inbound” activities will drain your energy and ability to stay in the “outbound” mode.

Lance was impressed as he took a minute to think about this, saying, “So, I should start my day by requesting favors from others before responding to what they want from me.  That makes great sense; that way, my requests are in their inbox early, just as theirs are in mine.”  Matthias responded, “Yes, if you take until noon to respond to others messages, before making requests of your own, then it is likely your request will not be addressed until after lunch or even the next day, because by this time, people have already determined what tasks will be completed today.”

Lance learned that completing your outbound work first leads to success.  Making calls and sending emails to promote sales before meeting the needs of everyone else means that you are in charge.  Matthias summarized, saying “Outbound mode empowers us to care of our responsibilities, reminding us to avoid the drain of incoming messages.  Taking a proactive approach to the way you live your life is yet another step toward becoming and staying successful.
