US Fidelis- Dos and Don't When Purchasing a Warranty

Whether you purchase your warranty from the dealer or a direct source, make sure you read and save all warranty documentation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Feb 04, 2009 -
Whether you purchase your warranty from the dealer or a direct source, make sure you read and save all warranty documentation. If you purchase your warranty on-line be sure to check the reputation of the company. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has a good rating or has any complaints against it.

Take the time to compare several different plans. Dealer warranties sometimes cost more because the dealer is a middleman and has added extra fees. If you go directly to an extended warranty company you have an opportunity to get a better deal.

Do not buy a specific auto extended warranty just because it is the least expensive. Always read your contract thoroughly so you know what is or is not covered. A contract that lists a few things that are not covered offers much more coverage than a contract that lists a few things that are covered. Some warranties cover “wear and tear” and will cover a part that has gotten old and has worn out — this is the most comprehensive coverage. Other warranties that only cover “mechanical breakdowns” are less expensive, but they only cover parts that have broken.

Ask about the deductible. Some warranties have just one deductible per visit others have a deductible per part repaired. If you put a little more money down you can avoid a deductible altogether.

When choosing an extended warranty find out if it is transferable. Some warranties end when the vehicle is sold, others transfer to the new owner.

You do not have to purchase an extended warranty when you purchase your vehicle. However, the longer you wait to buy an extended auto warranty the more it will cost. Warranty prices are typically impacted by the vehicle's age as well as mileage. The longest terms and lowest rates are offered for newer, lower mileage vehicles. Warranty rates will also go up as pricing for parts and labor go up. To get the most for your money it's better to purchase an extended auto warranty sooner rather than later.

Some companies will take advantage of consumers who are unaware of hidden meanings that questionable clauses may have. Sometimes a consumer may read the warranty contract and never really understand the coverage they are getting.
