When laid-off IT professional Bill Johnson created HireBillJohnson.com, he was hoping to garner attention. Central Florida Fox affiliate Fox 35 noticed and chose to feature him in a news story airing February 2nd. The story also featured Jacqueline Brito, a career coach at Rollins College.
Brito believes creative methods of job hunting can actually hurt, rather than help, the job seeker's chance of finding employment. She is of the opinion that "you either have the skill set that an employer is looking for or you don't".
But Bill Johnson points out that while that may have been true in past economic climates, in today's economy, "The standard methods of job hunting just aren't working. You have to do something to stand out."
The shift in the job market and the increased size of competition among job seekers is strikingly evident from the steadily growing crowds packing in to the Central Florida Job Fairs, where the attendance has been numbering into the thousands. There are an average of sixty applicants for every opening in Orlando, according to some estimates. A hiring manager will likely receive applications from several candidates who possess a desired skill set.
It is in this climate that Bill Johnson chose to create HireBillJohnson.com, an expanded online resume and portfolio. Johnson hopes that his website can showcase his skills, qualities, and talents to a prospective employer in a way that a standard emailed resume can't.
