Who would have ever thought that a small Haitian neighborhood in Miami would have such a great impact on today's musical landscape, Miami's contribution to music has come in the forms of Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, Trina, Pitbull, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, The Runners, Cool & Dre, and many more. What natives refer to as Little Haiti, is also the birthplace of Varick "Smitty" Smith, this rough area has cultivated a bevy of street kings and hood stars, but no one expected a highly-skilled, extremely-polished, and remarkable wordsmith. His music has that 'playback' effect on people, where they have to rewind it repeatedly to capture the clever illustration of his use of the English language.
Smitty was raised with a strict Bohemian-American upbringing, so the temptation of the fast life may have been enticing but it was not enough to make him stray away from what he had been taught. Making music was always his secret talent, so he found time to perfect his pen, writing lyrics on whatever was available. An industry friend's introductiom led to a chance meeting with Dr. Dre, while filming The Wash. Dre was so impressed with Smitty's delivery and penmanship, he arranged for him to work on The Wash Soundtrack. At this moment, a star was born and Smitty began jet-setting from New York to Los Angeles, penning songs for Diddy and Nelly, also collaborating with Scarface, Kanye West, and Trick Daddy.
Unbeknownst to Smitty, he was causing quite a stir between Aftermath, Arista, Capitol, Def Jam, and Elektra, however, there was one individual whose attention he captured that silenced all the rest, Mr. Clive Davis. Recognizing his incredible ambition, sheer talent and hunger for music, led to Davis signing him to J Records in 2003. As time passed, it was becoming evident that Smitty and the label were not on the same page. Despite irreconcilable differences, an amicable agreement was reached to part ways, and Smitty became a free agent. After a much needed hiatus to collect his thoughts and grow personally and musically, he found a new home at Chameleon/Blackground/
Smitty now understands that success in this game means artfully walking the thin line between making radio-friendly music with enough street edge that appeals to the masses. He wants to challenge all artists to put more pressure on themselves to craft their songs more carefully and to not be afraid to push the envelope. Beyond being an artist, he is also a humanitarian and wants to use his celebrity to inspire the younger generation that it's nothing wrong with taking the road less traveled, better yet, creating your own path. SMITTY…almost FAMOUS.
