February is American Heart Month. AEDs Save Lives!

Since 1963 the United States Congress has required each sitting President to declare February “American Heart Month”. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, but AEDs are saving more and more lives.

Feb. 2, 2009 - PRLog -- Cartersville, Atlanta, Georgia –  The month of February is mostly known for it’s special holiday that happens every 14th day of the this particular month.  Valentine’s Day is a wonderful holiday packed with cards, candy and flowers.  But what people are now starting to remember is that February is also “American Heart Month”.  Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, and surely we all know someone who is battling or has battled this demon.  Cardiovascular disease and stroke can be deadly, but your friends at H & R Fire and Safety want you to know that technology has brought to us a portable, user friendly device, that does save lives.  The AED or “Automated External Defibrillator” is just such a device.  AEDs are no longer big and bulky.  The defibrillators of today weigh less than 2-1/2 pounds.  They’re compact and easy to use.  With clear visual and audio prompts, just about anyone can use this life saving equipment.  They also are almost foolproof.  They show and tell you exactly where to place the pads.  You turn the AED on; it goes through its diagnostic checks and tells you when to apply the shock.  If for some reason it detects a regular heart rhythm it won’t power up to deliver a shock, that way the patient doesn’t get a shock that isn’t necessary.  Some of today’s AEDs carry a 3 year battery and pad shelf life, and up to a 7 year warrantee.  Most come with 45 minutes of internal memory to store ECG event monitoring that can be downloaded at the hospital or doctor’s office for incident reviewing.  AEDs are more than just delicate pieces of electronic equipment too.  A few of them even meet military specs for vibration and shock tolerances.   First Aid has come a long way in the past few years, and when it comes to heart attacks minutes count.  Given the opportunity you may be able to save a life.  Recommend to your person in charge of safety that you get First Aid and CPR training.  Keep safety a priority.  Set up an appointment with your Doctor or Cardiologist for a cardio physical, and remember, AEDs save lives!  For more information on Automated External Defibrillators; find a certified safety equipment dealer near you by checking your local yellow pages, or if you live in Georgia, GAFSED (Georgia Association of Fire Safety Equipment Dealers) is the place to look.  Of course you can always contact your friends at H & R Fire and Safety at 770-382-7650 or on the web at  http://www.hrfiresafety.com for all of your safety or fire equipment needs.  Have a great Valentine’s Day and remember; AEDs save lives!
