The demand for medical devices has been increasing in recent years in Russia. Demand for imported high tech medical devices is so high because local manufacturers concentrate mainly on inexpensive low tech products. The medical devices and equipment in most Russian hospitals and clinics are obsolete and need immediate replacement. These factors make the market very attractive also for foreign manufacturers.
Total demand for medical devices is estimated to about 1.4 billion euros in 2008. The growth in demand in 2007 was 7.1% but is believed to have slowed down in 2008 to 4.8% on account of the global financial climate. There is forecasted to be a downturn in demand but it will return to an increase and be between 1.3 and 1.6 billion euros in 2012.
