A new War Memorial, to Featherstone and District’s fallen service personnel of World Wars I and II, has been built from donated Ibstock bricks, specially selected by the Featherstone and District Memorial Garden Fund (British Legion), in Featherstone.
“We chose Ibstock brick because the company has local associations through the nearby Nostell brickworks,”
The Opening Ceremony, performed by Lord St Oswald from Nostell Priory, was on October 5, 2008.
The 4 metre high enclosure is designed by local Brian Clayton and built in Ibstock’s Staffordshire Smooth Blue and Royston Red bricks. Decorative details suggested by Ibstock’s design adviser include capping, special bricks and Royston Cream brick string courses. The wall is topped with cream coping donated by Ibstock’s sister company Forticrete.
The wall width varies from 665mm to 440mm in the 11 recessed panels where stainless steel commemorative plaques will remember the names of the personnel. A plinth, finished in Staffordshire Blue special bricks, runs below the plaques to accommodate wreaths and flowers.
Part funding for the Memorial and Garden has been donated by in which the fallen had served, and also many local businesses and private individuals.
