Jan. 30, 2009 - PRLog -- New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome (NJCTS) and the Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology offer the country's only stand-alone, university-based Tourette Syndrome clinic. Now in its ninth year, the NJCTS Rutgers TS Clinic is making some of its sought-after services available to more families by establishing a second clinic.

A satellite clinic at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville begins Monday, March 2. Social skills groups for children with TS and groups for parents and siblings are available.  Families of children with TS in the greater Morris County area are encouraged to enroll.  This 10-week program will meet every Monday from 6-7:30 p.m.

The NJCTS Rutgers TS Clinic in Piscataway will continue to offer individual therapy and group sessions for children, parents and siblings.  This treatment involves non-invasive techniques that can be helpful for individuals who are struggling with TS or any of its associated conditions like attention deficit disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder. Therapy can be used as an alternative, in some cases, or a compliment to medication.

For more information, or to register, contact NJCTS at 908-575-7350 or the NJCTS Rutgers TS Clinic at 732-445-6111 ext. 27.

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements known as tics. It’s often accompanied by other conditions like attention deficit and obsessive compulsive disorders. It’s estimated that 1 in 200 children have TS, that’s 28,000 in New Jersey alone. New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome (NJCTS)-a partnership among the Tourette Syndrome Association of New Jersey, Rutgers University and health professionals throughout the state- is the first of its kind in the nation. This model program offers coordinated services for families, referrals to comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services, training opportunities for professionals and research opportunities for scientists looking for causes, better treatments and possibly a cure.
