Prices for the product range from €25 to as much as €75 per 10mg bottle of Melanotan, which is available to Irish consumers from a number of websites. The Irish Medicines Board (IMB) confirmed that Melanotan continues to be unlicensed. A spokesperson said: "The IMB strongly advises consumers not to purchase medicinal products through unauthorised sources, as there can be no guarantees on the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of products purchased in this manner." The spokesperson added: "Supplying the drug into the country is illegal." Dr Patrick Treacy, medical director of the Ailesbury Clinic said he was uneasy about the drug being sold on the internet directly to people. Concerns "I would have some concerns about it being on sale on the internet. And it does concern me the way it's a bit like Botox, which has skipped over from the medical to the cosmetic realm." However, Dr Treacy added that he believed the drug has the potential to be "a wonderful product" in the future. "It has great potential in regards to reducing the risk of skin cancer. The problem with Irish people is that they don't produce enough melanin. So if you can stimulate that, then obviously it's a good thing because people will then stay out of the sun," he added. hnews@herald.ie - Aoife Anderson End
