New number plate rules catch drivers out
Under the new MOT rules, testing staff will now have to check the vehicle number plates to ensure that they conform to the new law, if they do not then the vehicle will not pass the MOT.
This is plan to clamp down on those vehicle owners who have illegal number plates and the drivers who spray a reflective background on their number plate in an attempt to prevent their number plate from being taken by a speed camera or other CCTV equipment.
The MOT testing stations will only pass the number plates so long as they have not been overprinted or have shadow text, no honey background will be allowed neither will non reflective borders and finally if the characters are placed too close together.
It is estimated that around forty thousand vehicles are likely to fail the MOT during the first year, although owners of personalised number plates where the characters have been placed to create initials or a word will not fail the MOT although they will be fined £60 instead of the current £30.
This is a bit of an issue with people, because the DVLA hold six number plate auctions every year where they make thousands of pounds for the government by selling personalised number plates, which encourage the buyers to rearrange the characters to make a word or initials.
Some figures estimate that there are around four million vehicles on the road today that could have illegal number plates, that is twelve per cent of all vehicles.
