Jan. 26, 2009 - PRLog -- Today’s announcement by BHP Billiton is a clear indication of the significant challenges facing the Western Australian resource sector as a result of the current global economic environment, according to the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME).

CME President Kim Horne said resource companies are making difficult decisions to enable them to have the best prospects into the future and are very mindful of the impact these decisions have on individuals and their local communities.

“While the year ahead is shaping up to be challenging, we remain optimistic about the future,” Mr Horne said.

“Western Australian mineral and energy producers have consistently been recognised as world leaders in productivity and profitability and in times of down turn we must consolidate, build capacity and prepare for the future,” he said.

CME believes the present situation provides an opportunity for people to consider either undertaking new training or consolidating their skills by going back to study so that they are well positioned to maximise opportunities when the situation turns around.

“This is a global issue but I have absolute confidence that resource companies in Western Australian will continue to work hard to support the local communities in which we live and work,” said Mr Horne.
