Associate degree is awarded by the community colleges, junior colleges, four-year program universities, business colleges and some bachelor’s degree-granting colleges/universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years. The three major study destinations, USA, UK AND Australia are offering these programs in different streams and many students from different parts of the world are showing their interest towards the program.
An associate degree is equivalent to the first two years of a four-year degree program. It is the lowest in the hierarchy of postsecondary academic degrees offered in these countries. Usually associate degrees will be offered by the affiliated colleges at universities. Australia added "associate degree" to the Australian Qualifications Framework. This title was given to more academically focused advanced diploma courses. However, very few courses yet use the new title.

Types of Associate Degrees
Typically associate degrees are categorized into two types:
i. Transfer Degrees: It forms the foundation of bachelor’s degree that enables students to complete their general education requirements prior to transfer to a four year university program. Usually these programs include, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts and other relevant courses.
ii. Career or professional degrees: These associate degree courses are awarded for the students willing to undertake a professional oriented study program in order to study more course work in their program area. These programs include, Associate in Applied Science, Associate in Industrial Technology, Associate in Business Administration, Associate in Business Administration, Associate in Occupational Studies and as such.
