The Andretti Winery proudly walked away from the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this month with a gold medal, two silver medals, a bronze medal and best of class. The unprecedented recognition was for these five varietals.
Best of Class in $35 to $45 category: 2006 Andretti Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Gold Medal in $14 and over category: 2007 Andretti Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Silver Medal Blends: 2006 Andretti Napa Valley Zinfandel-Primitivo
Silver Medal in $35 and over category: 2006 Andretti Napa Valley Syrah
Bronze Medal in $39 and over category: 2007 Andretti Napa Valley Sangiovese
The professional wine judging took place at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair during the week of January 5, 2009. The judges were food and wine journalists, restaurant wine buyers, retail wine buyers, winemakers, professors of wine education and industry representatives. They evaluated a record 4,736 wines entered by wineries from across the country. Wines were awarded as gold, silver, bronze and double gold (unanimous gold by the judges). In addition, there were Best of Class Awards given for each of the wine judging categories.
In a career that spanned an unprecedented five decades, Mario Andretti achieved prominence in almost every category of motor racing. He was Formula One World Champion, Indy 500 winner, Daytona 500 winner, four-time Indy Car National Champion, USAC National Dirt Track Champion and three-time winner of 12 Hours of Sebring, among others. He was named Driver of the Year in three different decades, Driver of the Quarter Century, and Driver of the Century by the Associated Press and RACER Magazine.
