"Drink beer, love life!" Those words, scrawled in black Sharpie marker across the face of the My Wicked Twin's debut CD, were a good indication of the music on the disc.
The little epithet was handwritten by Brent Doerner, a rock veteran who honed his guitar chops as the axeman Helix.
Nearly three decades after he and his Helix bandmates inspired headbanging everywhere, Doerner is back.
The music from My Wicked Twin is firmly rooted in the classic-rock tradition. The tunes are so steeped in beery irresponsibility that they're bad for your liver. The music just goes nicely with suds.
My Wicked Twin is actually the renamed, streamlined incarnation of Doerner's earlier band, Decibel (hence the name of this album: Decibel Music).
The new moniker is partly a reflection of the band's personnel, as drumming duties are handled by Brent Doerner's identical twin brother, Brian, who also pounded skins for Helix.
The Doerner twins are indeed wicked.
The guitar licks are simple but catchy, the vocals are raspy but melodic, and the music is fresh.
The album's 10th and arguably strongest track, That Kind of a Love, features a killer combo bluesy slide guitar and mandolin. That song is followed by a hypercharged rocker called Get Your Game On.
My Wicked Twin pumps out party rawk with a simple, eternal sentiment: Drink beer, love life.
