Five years after the first campus in Looc opened in 2004, Stephanie Montessori Educational Center (SMEC) has outgrown its facilities. The new building, located in Cordova, was completed in June 2008. This houses the preschoolers, while the Looc campus accommodates the elementary school children.
Stephanie Montessori Educational Center (SMEC) provides a place where children are happy to learn. After all, it was Maria Montessori who said, “A true test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.” We do not merely implement a method of education, but it is our goal to give all children a chance to live and be happy.
Stephanie Montessori Educational Center (SMEC) is an educational institution that cares for the growing physical, emotional, cognitive and creative needs of children. We provide a holistic approach to cater to children’s development, mainly using Maria Montessori’s Principles and Method of Education as guides and standards. We uphold each child as an individual who is full of potential and waiting to bloom.
Using hands-on materials, we effectively facilitate the teaching-learning process. With our innate love for children, we help mold them into responsible and multi-intelligent individuals who respect themselves, others and the world around them.

Stephanie Montessori Educational Center (SMEC) was founded by Lily Vergara-Richards in 2004. Lily is the daughter of the late Jose Vergara, Sr., one of the prominent businessmen in Cebu City. Lily lives in Downey, California, with her husband, Arnie Richards, a former Mattel Toys executive (now retired). Lily has also worked for Mattel Toys for over 20 years. Though thousands of miles away, she has successfully managed running the two campuses with the help of her trusted School Director & Principal, Mrs. Shiryl Dulhao-Gatal, and her Bookkeeper/Office Manager, Mrs. Razel Cañete.
Lily inherited her father’s spirit and with a passionate desire to give back to the community and country she loves, founded SMEC. She takes great fulfillment in being a contributor to the growing needs of young Filipino families in their quest for excellent education for their young children.
