Kent, Washington – In December 2008, Stephen and Sue Froyd celebrated their first year of ownership of Bittersweet Restaurant, a favorite downtown café for more than 30 years. After getting a feel for the business and its customers, the Froyds decided to modernize the restaurant and open for breakfast, seven days a week.

The Froyds began the cozy restaurant’s transformation by redecorating last spring and adding artwork from local artists. This month Ricardo Campagnoli’s work is featured at Bittersweet, adding a bold, abstract flair to the restaurant.

In addition, the Froyds have expanded Bittersweet’s hours to include breakfast seven days a week. The new morning menu features traditional breakfast fare as well as customer favorites like hot cinnamon rolls, freshly baked scones, blintzes and fluffy egg strata. The morning menu also offers two signature dishes:  baked eggs with a homemade biscuit and Eggs Bittersweet, the restaurant’s version of Eggs Benedict. In mid-January, Bittersweet added French press coffee to its menu. Roasted on Vashon Island, the coffee is served in individual pots and is the “absolute best” coffee, according to the Froyds.

“People have been asking us to open for breakfast, so we expanded our hours in December,” Sue Froyd said. “Bittersweet offers a deliciously different morning menu that our customers love.”

So far, the restaurant has been drawing a good-sized morning crowd from downtown businesses, Froyd said. “It’s a joy to watch people enjoy breakfast.”

Located at 211 First Avenue South in downtown Kent, Bittersweet Restaurant is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Breakfast is served until 10:30 a.m. on weekdays, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is available daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Comfortably seating 55, the restaurant is available in the evenings for banquets, business meetings, rehearsal dinners and other functions. In addition to Bittersweet, Stephen and Sue Froyd own Maggie’s on Meeker, Excellent Eats catering and AAA Pest Control.
